Day 37: WAFL? What AFL?

The start of the women's AFL tournament has been a big deal amongst my mob, not least of all because one of the cousins is playing for one of the Melbourne teams. And yet, after all the talk and all the "backyard" footy matches I've played in the last few years, I still managed to forget that it premiered on the weekend. Thank fuck afl.com.au has a catch-up service. I've just got to make sure I get the first four matches watched before my next conversation with the nieces.

At some point I'm going to have to do a post on "backyard" sports with my mob.

It's a pity about the naming, isn't it?

The WAFL, of course has existed for 100 years or so, so they are not likely to want to relinquish the trademark on that name for a bunch of chicks.

Anyway.

I hope the AFLW is a roaring success and the women get what's rightfully theirs (ie, a decent paycheque and not having to play in the summer heat for a start). It was heartening to see all the interest last week, even if I didn't get time to catch a game.

The games are all up on the AFL's website if you're interested Suze.

It's the same debate as with WBBL cricket. "How can you justify investing a ton of money into paying the players properly when they're not generating revenue" vs "How are you going to lift the quality of the game to a level where it's generating that kind of revenue if you don't invest a ton of money into it"
