Assuming there's no "magical" element to consciousness, thoughts and ideas must be physical things. Like everything else, they have to exists in the physical world, as specific, individual encodings of brain cells and whatnot … right? If you think about it that way, ideas aren't that much different to a lot of pathogens. They replicate themselves by jumping from host to host, and they're always mutating and adapting.
