I've had the wireless tuned to the BBC all day today. Not so much because I wanted to get minute-by-minute updates of what was going on, but because I wanted to follow the reactions and the overall mood coming from the commentariat. Here is an unorganised list of musings:
As soon as it became clear that the Tories probably wouldn't be able to manage an outright majority, people began floating the idea that Labour might be able to form a minority government. This was despite the fact that early on, they were reporting that the Unionists in Northern Ireland had already pledged their support to the Tories. As I write this, I believe their combined total is only one seat away from governing has them over the line.
Once they realised they were losing seats, a lot of conservatives began talking about how the election had been a terribly risky venture that nobody besides May and a few of her closest allies thought was a good idea. Bullshit. I don't remember any of these cunts talking about the dangers of taking on Corbyn back when Labour was coming third in by-elections and their own sitting members were openly discussing breaking away to form an alternate party.
Speaking of which, I've had quite a chuckle listening to very uncomfortable Labour MPs eating crow over this.
It seems the Jocks have given the SNP a major kick up the arse. From what I've been hearing, it seems there's a lot of folk up North who aren't keen on breaking away from one union just so they can re-join another. But I need confirmation on this—I've found the BBC's coverage of Scotland and Wales a bit wanting to be honest.
Also, I've only heard a few interviews with Scottish conservative leader Ruth Davidson, but she seems really charismatic and personable. Maybe that's been a factor?
Even though he didn't win, I think what Corbyn has done is remarkable, if only because of the savage mockery he seemed to be copping from every news publication I looked at. As one commentator said: This is proof that the mainstream news media aren't steering the ship in the same way they used to.
