All of my podcasts are currently raving about two Netflix shows. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (spelling?) and Stranger Things.
Really not interested in the first one, since I think it's a sitcom. The second one sounds more intriguing. I'm hearing it described as resembling something that was written by Stephen King, directed by Stephen Spielberg, with a score by John Carpenter. It's supposedly set in the '80s and perfectly captures the atmosphere of creepy chiller-thriller horror flicks from that error. I'm almost tempted to give it a go.
If anyone tries either of them, can they let me know how it goes?
Cheers.

Have heard good things about Stranger Things and will investigate
Watched all that is available of Kimmy Schmidt AND IT IS FUCKING GREAT. Yes it's a comedy but it's so dark. WATCH IT. WATCH IT. Don't even think about it, just watch it. Give it a good go. Also last night we watched some episodes of something called Drunk History, have you seen it or heard of it. Premise is: people talk about history while they are smashed on alcohol and actors act it out. Sounds weird, but is funny. (Not sure if you like funny and I know it seems pretty off to laugh at people being drunk, it's not that, it's more the actors lipsyncing what the narrators are saying and how whatever they say is 'worked around' and the facial expressions. Anyway, thought it brilliant and you learn some history too.
The praise I'd heard for Stranger things finally reached critical mass and I had to watch it. I started watching it this morning, will probably be finished by tonight; it's only 8 episodes long.
I didn't think it was possible for me to get this riveted to a screen anymore. I haven't written a single note so far. Don't want to take the time. It's hard to describe what's great about it. It's a very simple story with very simple characters, but the story telling is so intense. Also, it's very visual story-telling. Unlike GOT or OITNB, I reckon you could follow it with the sound off.
I have seen some drunk history. Like the Pom version more than the Yank one. It's not that I don't find it funny, I just don't find it compelling enough to keep watching.
I find your description of Kimmy Schmidt very tempting. I might grab it for next weekend. Netflix seem to be really doing well with their original series, don't they?
WEll that is high praise indeed for Stranger Things, I will definitely check out in the next week or so. And Kimmy Schmidt, just talking about it makes me want to watch it again. Look forward to hearing what you think, hope you like it.
They are going really with their originals, giving HBO a bit of a run
I'm skipping all these comments as I am still catching up on OITNB. Now I feel bad for calling Chapman entitled (that's such a crappy word, isn't it) - all because I am still holding some grudge about a few scrawny blondes from 25 years AGO, how pathetic. In fact Chapman is quite comical. Even more strange is I am starting to like the Christian fundy girl with the new teeth. I'm up to the part where the prison has just gone private and Red has returned to the kitchen. It goes without saying that Red is fabulous
Now I have to watch FTBC :)
Glad you're liking OITNB Squib. Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts once you're all caught up.
I have a love/hate relationship with Chapman, but Doggett's character arc is great (as is Red's).
I think "entitled" is a word that gets abused nowadays—much like "privileged".
Am pushing Kimmy Schmidt off for another couple of weeks, due to family commitments and the Olympics. PS: Seven's coverage of the Olympics has been shit.
I'm not interested in the Olympics but go ahead, you watch, I'm busy as hell down here and let's talk Kimmy Schmidt once you've watched. In fact, I think I want to watch it again and might start this weekend. Makes me laugh but be warned, I suppose, there are probably triggers in it, eg abduction, rape etc. It's not explicit and there is nothing graphic about it, it's almost the 'cleanest' show ever, can't even remember if there is swearing, but it's there, very dark, which is why it's so brilliant in my opinion (but yes, Tina Fey got shit for it, as usual it's never very long before Backlash happens).
OK, right, sounds good. Will put up a post once I start watching.
Speaking of words that get abused nowadays, "trigger" is an excellent example. A while ago I noticed it creeping into the Youtube videos I listen to; and while doing research for my post on the weird world of ASMR, I fell down a rabbit hole regarding the "liberal movement against regressive leftism". Has anyone else heard of this? I think it's going to get its own post.
I'm also working on a post about footy, believe it or not. I swear, sometimes this blogging caper feels like a second job.
