It seems like everything's fucked at the moment. If it's not the prospect of a minority government here in Oz, it's the prospect of the Brexit causing the markets to collapse. And now the fuckin' ABC has stopped making "The Book Club" episodes available for ex-pats to download. Cunts.
Well, let me just assure you, there's no reason to panic.
First of all, there's no reason to fear a hung parliament or cross-benchers holding the balance of power in the senate. Despite the shit coming out of Bill, Malcolm, and every other fuckin' talking head in the media, the last hung parliament we had worked fine. In fact, I'd say the thing you should be more worried about is either of the big parties getting control of both houses. And no, I don't particularly trust the ALP—not after last time around. Look, just keep calm and vote for whichever cunt takes your fancy; even if they're an independent or some way-out minor-party ding-bat. After all, we've got a fuckin' preferential voting system in this country, so you might as well put it to good use.
Also, there's no point in panicking over Brexit. Christ, one of my nephews was on the verge of tears on the weekend, because he thought there was going to be a third world war. Well, maybe there will be; but for that, my money's on the US picking a fight with China and/or Russia. Anyway, yes, the markets have taken a bit of a hit, but that has itself largely been the product of blind panic. Things'll bounce back again. … Well, sort of … look, the EU was probably going to suffer some sort of major economic crisis in the not-too-distant future anyway—regardless of whether the UK stayed or not. Maybe this hastens things along a little bit, but I think the writing was already well and truly on the wall. And yes, the decoupling process is probably going to be far from smooth and simple—there's going to be all kinds of issues with migrants and business and property to sort out—but frankly, after what happened with Greece and Cyprus—I think I probably would have been willing to risk it too.*
And as for the fuckin' Book Club—watch this space—because I'm already working on a way to remedy the issue. See, just like I said: it's gonna be fine.
*I think the biggest issue you're going to face in the UK is a bursting property bubble, but that was coming either way as well. If you're stuck over there for the long haul, the most you can probably do is just hang on and hope for the best.
Well, that's my view from the comfort of my armchair on the other side of the world. I'd be more than interested to hear what somebody who's living in the middle of it has to say though.

You are seriously ACE. SERIOUSLY. I will get back about the rest later as have to take LittleSquib to dentist and THEN I have have to watch Book Club :)
I take it from your email that you are right for Game of Thrones? How are you for Orange Is The New Black?
Hope everything goes well with the dentist.
The dentist phoned while we were en route and said oops, we made a mistake, your daughter's appointment is not for another two months... Yes! We've watched 4 episodes of GOT so should be up to date soon
I've watched the other thing, yay, very kind of you to arrange as it probably took ages? For your interest, the second episode 'books that changed my life' had an x-men comic thing on there. I didn't like the 2nd episode much as Marieke and Jason were not on there and I thought the books the guests chose were a bit drab. Episode 5 was the best. Thanks again
I haven't watched orange black but I can watch it for free as we now have Netflix. So I might check it out
Brexit has totally depressed me. And now Scotland will have another referendum and they will win but they will not be accepted into the EU by themselves and so not only will they have a worthless North Sea (re: their supposed funding) but they will be completely on their own, waving their saltires and going all Braveheart. It REALLY bothers me, all this isolationist stuff because I now live here
And if Trump gets in, my god, start building a shelter
I think I'd be a bit pissed off if I got a call from the dentist at the last minute telling me: a) I had to wait another 2 months to see someone; and b) they'd waited 'til the last minute to tell me.
The book club was easy enough to sort out. The great thing about being able to code is that you can automate repetitive tasks. If you have any young people in the house, you could probably do a lot worse than directing them to take up programming. Just a suggestion. Not that I've had much luck with that strategy myself.
What's your preference for future episodes? Streaming or downloadable?
I think you're the first person I've heard say that the EU wouldn't take back an independent Scotland. Can you tell me more about that theory? On a related note, I'm hearing more and more about the possibility of an Irish reunion now too. Dunno what Wales wants to do.
This might just be the inexplicable high I'm on at the moment, but I'm not that worried about Trump. Yes, he's a fuckwit and a cunt, but the government is more than one person (even in the US), and I honestly don't think he'd be that much worse than George W. In many ways, he'd probably be better, since he doesn't have Bush's economic or idealogical incentives for going to war.
Whatever you're on, I want some! Trump not too bad?! Hah, well that's certainly different
I don't know, I thought the EU had said no to Scotland but who knows, it's a complete shambles. No one seems to know what's going on
I don't mind streaming or downloading - makes no difference to me
Programming might be good for LittleSquib since she spends every spare minute in front of a screen. Grrr
Sadly I think she's more a passive tech consumer than a creator :/
To be fair, I didn't say Trump wouldn't be bad, I said I didn't think he'd be that much worse than Bush. Hey, give me a break; I've just lived through 2 years of an Abbott government.
Programming is quite addictive once you get good enough that it makes you feel powerful and in control of your computer. Getting there's the problem. Like I said, I've never had any success with any of my nieces or nephews. They'd rather be watching Minecraft videos on Youtube.
By the way, Squib; are you interested in "Jennifer Byrne Presents"?
