The women's T20 world cup cricket tournament is winding down, with only the grand final left to play (It's on 9Gem, Sunday morning—AU-time, if you're keen). Once again, the Aussies will be facing off against their mortal foes, the Poms. At least I won't have to think about who I want to cheer for.
ho-hum
While I'm culturally obliged to be happy if Australia win, I can't help but feel like I've seen this all before. And indeed I have. If you pull up the history of the ICC women's championships, you'll see that—disregarding the Windies narrow victory over Australia in the T20 tournament in 2016—the list of champions is only two countries long. Speaking of the Windies, it was absolutely heart-breaking to see the Aussies obliterate them in front of their own home crowd this morning. In front of a packed stadium no less.
Maybe I'm just too much of a softy to follow sports—but I can't help it—I love a good underdog tale. Truth be told, I was hoping that this year I'd get to see something special from South Africa. Their bowling line-up is top class, and a total joy to watch in action. Alas, their batting was a complete disaster.
India made it as far as the semis, even scoring a win over Australia in the preliminary stage. Sadly though, England proved too good for them in the end. Doubly sad considering it was the Poms who rolled them in last year's One-Day tournament as well. And while I'm sure that the Curry-Munchers will get there eventually, I'd love to see it happen while Harmanpreet Kaur, Mithali Raj, and Smriti Mandhana are all still on the team. After everything I've seen those girls go through, I'd love to see them up on that champions podium, at least once.
Maybe this is the angle they need to push more in the promotional material. Then again, maybe it's just me who sees things this way.
