I haven't watched this stuff yet and I may not get around to it; but I'm perusing the ABC & SBS on-demand listings and two things have jumped out at me:
- The Tribe: Episode 1
- Appears to be a fly-on-the-wall, reality, drama type show (you know the sort)—with the twist being, it's set in a rural village in Ethiopia. In this episode, an aging woman asks her husband to marry a second—younger—wife, to help her out with domestic duties.
- Not Quite Hollywood
- A documentary about Ozploitation cinema in the 70s & 80s
Speaking of exploitation cinema, is anyone planning on seeing the new Tarantino flick when it comes out? And has anyone gotten around to seeing the new Star Wars yet?

Yes, I want to see Tarantino flick. I love that stuff, especially if there's snow
Want to see The Revenant, also
You remember they brought out an old Stars Wars movie some years ago, digitally remastered? Well I went to see that, believing it was a NEW Star Wars movies. About one third of the way in I thought hang on, this seems really familiar. Oh wait, I've seen this before! Well, watching this new Star Wars was a lot like that
Cheers Squib. Going by that review, I think I'll wait to see Star Wars on video.
What's the basic idea behind The Revenant? They've been doing promos for it during the cricket, but the ads are just a bunch of cryptic quotes and slow-motion footage set to dramatic music—ie: the same as every other bog-standard action-drama from the last fifteen years.
Remember the days when you could watch a film preview and come away at least thinking you knew what you were in for?
I am desperate for the new Tarantino. I love all of his stuff and like you, squib, am excited by snow. Also, the Revenant but not so desperately.
I LOVED THE NEW STAR WARS
But what IS The Revenant?
Also, what was it you liked about Star Wars, Melbs? And was it just a re-hash of the original—albeit a good one?
It was referential of the original, not a re-hash I didn't think. The storyline is advanced through it and it's pushing into new narrative territory. There were too many coincidences though, I thought that was very lazy. But I loved it because it had a female lead (Rey), and an African-American sidekick (Finn), intimations of some sort of gay attraction between two men (Am I reading into it? Am I being influenced by something I read online by someone who was talking about it being a love story between Poe and Finn? Maybe. But I liked it. It was nostalgic (something I don't have a problem with, I actually love it), and exciting. I didn't see any of the prequels, and was never interested in those, but this one picks up, albeit 30 years after the end of Return of the Jedi... and it's just cool. It also has Adam Driver in it from Girls, who I really like, and thought he was excellent. And it has the best lightsaber fight scene in a forest, between him (baddie) and Rey.
In other geek news, P and I have been watching something called The Quest on netflix. It's basically Survivor meets Game of Thrones. Cheesy as hell but it's SO GOOD. WE have three eps to go and are devastated that they haven't made a second series, although it probably wouldn't work, would be boring, they'd need a new land/actors/premise.
Also, we have just watched Making a Murderer (10 hours) and The Jinx (6) in the last week or so. Fantastic viewing. Do yourselves a favour if you're at all interested in true crime and haven't watched this stuff yet. Creepy as fuck.
Thank you for the more in-depth answer Melbs. Given the split between you and Squib, I won't see it in the cinema, but I will definitely put it on my "to watch" list (for what that's worth).
I haven't heard of Jinx or The Quest, but I have heard of Making a Murder. I don't feel strongly motivated to watch it, but I am glad that people are making documentaries about police misconduct. It's—like—one of the most important issues there is. On the topic, I'd also recommend people look into the case where the West Aussie coppers framed a slightly retarded man for murder (don't remember the name). I believe the ABC made a doco out of that a few years ago too.
Lastly, I have business out bush, so activity might be sporadic for the next week or so.
