In Case You Missed It, Melbs

John Oliver did a show on sex-ed in America. Bet you're glad you don't have to teach there, ay?

Also, farewell to the retiring Jon Stewart. The quality of his show has been down for the last couple of years, but I'm still sad to see him go.

All told, it's been quite an innings. As far as cultural impact goes, he's probably the most influential English-speaking comedian of my lifetime — and it's nice, for once, to be able to say something like that and mean it in a positive way. Satire of the news is probably as old as the news itself, but Stewart has taken it to a different level. For years, he's been providing a steady, persistent reminder of how full of shit the media is and why you shouldn't trust authority figures. Paradoxically, this has made him into an authority figure in his own right. I've often seen reports referring to him as one of the most trusted figures in journalism, accompanied by findings that people who use his show as their primary source of news tend to be as well informed as people who rely on a dedicated news channel. On several occasions, I've heard Stewart say that he finds this incredibly disappointing.

Hopefully, people like Oliver and Stewart's replacement can maintain the momentum, and this whole deal doesn't become an artifact of the early 21st century.

Whatever happens — Cheers Jon — I'm gonna miss ya, bloke.

I'll come back and comment once I've finished watching it. I already had this open in my browser and was half way through when I saw your post. Also got contacted by a community radio station to discuss this and the state of play for sex ed in Australia, am having that chat on Monday! So, it's all happening.

Neat. Do you know the time and channel of the broadcast? If they have an internet stream, I might be able to listen.

Hey so I did this but haven't heard anything. Maybe it was crap recording, boring or whatever... will let you know if I hear. It was recorded and she said it would play this week (I thought) maybe I got that wrong. BUT I have five things lined up for the novel. One is phone interview for a newspaper, and the other four are radio. OMG

Exciting stuff! I want to listen to them all—or one of them, at the very least. I need more info!

Well, I didn't hear from this person to do with the sex ed, so don't know when that's happening or if it is.

Have six things lined up now for novel though. Will email you closer to dates if you like, you can listen to me flounder! You and my mum...

Yes please on the emails. I quite like the thought of myself and your mum listening to you over the wireless together.
