Free Speech. Tim Wilson. CuntCunt. Women's Cricket.

So, after all that shit about defending Andrew Bolt's right to be a bigoted prick and criticise blacks (which I primarily supported), the govt is now taking measures to stop public servants from being critical of the govt (which I do not).

What happened to all those fundamental democratic principles that our fearless Attorney General was fighting to defend? Come on Brandis, where the fuck are you on this one, mate?

... and since that article has a big picky of our new Human Rights commissioner Tim Wilson in it, I might as well have a spray about him too ...

I know I called Bolt a loathsome cunt, but in some ways, I probably find people like Wilson scarier, because they don't undermine their own credibility by coming off as fucking clownish lunatacs -- unless you're really paying attention to what they say.

Unfortunately, I've heard Wilson talk many many times; but there was one video (which I can't find now) where he was addressing a university or something, that really caught my attention:

He made a statement along the lines that unregulated free-market capitalism is such a great system that even if it produces outcomes that people don't like, those outcomes are still "right" by definition, because of the inherent virtue of the system that produces them.

I can only assume that by outcomes, he was talking about stock market crashes, depression, abusive working conditions, environmental degredation, pollution, contamination, famine, etc.

To me, saying that any outcome is "good" so long as you reach it through a process of ideological purity, is basically akin to religious zealotry, and hearing those sentiments expressed by anyone who's in any shape connected with crafting policy for any major political party is scary as fuck.

But of course, just like religious zealots, the degree of conviction that cunts like this seem to have in their principled beliefs seems to be directly related to how the enforcement of those beliefs affects themselves and people they care about.

Oh, and I hear you're getting new laws cracking down on protests down there in Vic, Melbs?

Also, I think I said before the sporting body in charge of this sort of thing should really try pushing women's 20/20 cricket in this country. Now might be a good time to start.

Whenever this conversation comes up with my sporty brother, he makes the argument that most people want to watch the most elite sporting competitions they can, and women aren't going to hit as many boundaries, etc, etc because of their physical inferiority*. To which I say, that must be why women's tennis never caught on, huh?

*He does word it a little more diplomatically than that. But I know what he means. I've known him all my life.

Och. Where to start? I think we already GOT the new anti-protest laws, Alex. It makes me remember QLD in the good old JBP times. I remember thinking - as a young woman - 'how can this happen in this country' And 'fuck I'm glad I don't live up there' - not because I was protesty or anything, just for the principle.

Women's cricket. I can say I wouldn't watch it, I don't watch any sport any more really. I used to really love watching tennis but don't bother any more.

The free speech thing. And everything else political, I guess I'm just trying to ignore it all and hope it goes away or we turn in a circle and come back to the beginning again (which is what usually happens.) It's probably what a lot of people were thinking in Europe in the 1930s. It's a bad mindset but I understand the protective nature of it. Self protective that is.

Hey you anywhere near the big storm up there? Stay safe!

I get wanting to look the other way unless it's something that affects you and yours directly; I just don't think it's something I can do right now, for some reason. Not that I can really do anything about any of it. Things were so much easier when I was a callous, self-centered nihilist.

I imagine there'd be a lot of people who wouldn't watch women's cricket; but the point is that if it never gets promoted, nobody gets to watch it. It's an argument I've been having with my brother for as long as I can remember.

Speaking of sport on the telly, I heard on Media Watch that the Ten Network looks like going bust. Again. Apparently things have been going down the shitter since Murdoch & friends bought into it. Call me cynical, but I can't help but think that Mr Foxtel had an ulterior motive when they took all the sport off Channel 1.

On the bright side, maybe no more Mr Bolt?

Thankfully, I'm far enough away from the storm that I shouldn't have to worry about being blown away; which is nice. I just have to be wary of where the water goes.
