I spent today listening to the wireless again ...

... and thought I'd throw out my two bob on the stories that, for some reason, seemed to have dominated the airwaves.

Tony Abbott Brings Back Knighthoods:

Normally, this is the type of thing I don't give a shit about. However, when I think about it, the process of handing out these things is probably going to involve a special awards ceremony, or at the very least, some sort of official paperwork. And since the country's apparently too poor to keep paying disabled pensions or additional support to war orphans, I don't see how they can justify any non-essential spending.

They can abolish all that "Order Of Australia" and "Australian Of The Year" bollocks while they're at it too, for all I care. That should save a few pennies, at least.

PM + GG
I don't mind somebody having a wank, but not on my dime, thank you very much.

George Brandis Wants To Change The Racial Discrimination Act:

I don't like George Brandis. I don't believe him when he says the ASIO raids on Bernard Collaery were a matter of national security. I hope somebody in the department leaks everything about that case to the internet. I hope one day he's hauled in front of an enquiry and grilled about it. And I hope it goes decidedly worse for him than that fucking farce of a thing that Howard and Downer faced over the AWB scandal (though, I'm not holding my breath).

And I'm certainly no fan of Andrew Bolt. I think he's vile, and I find the fact that anyone takes anything he says seriously disconcerting.

However, I agree that there shouldn't be any sort of law that protects people from being offended or insulted.

So I'm apparently for this one. Go figure.

Andrew Bolt: Loathsome Cunt
There may be debate over whether or not Andrew Bolt is a racist, but it's hard to argue he's not a loathsome cunt.

He is a loathesome cunt but apparently I, like you, are for that one too, ie that there shouldn't be a law to protect people from being insulted or offended. That's a bit ridic. But I'm all for legislation that protects against racial vilification. A line needs to be drawn somewhere, when it comes to things like race, gender, sexuality, physical ability or disability, religion (spew) so that people can be how they are/think what they want, without being attacked, bullied, discriminated against job-wise and society-wise etc.

And I love the way you say wireless. But the whole day? I can't manage 30 seconds of the thing. Whenever I get into the car after Clokes has used it, the radio is always on, always tuned to some sport dickheads. I know why he does it, he likes to listen to sport dickheads, and when one or other of his kids are in the car, it also means they don't have to talk. It fills the silence. Whereas me and P, any other noise interrupts our conversation. It's taken me a long time to really get that everyone IS different. And that's okay.

PS On the knighthoods thing, I don't care, in the same way I don't care what Abbott says or does. I'll only maybe start caring again when he's out. I can't believe we have a PM that makes me pine for fucking Howard.

Brandis. Don't know, haven't followed, don't care to know. But if you say he's bad I believe it. Hopefully he goes down.

If there was a revolution, would you join? I'm serious. And also, would you move countries to get away from a bad government? I've thought about NZ in the past, when Howard was in. But now, I am so disillusioned, I think: just stay here and pretend it's all a bad dream. I'm lucky I suppose that I can do that. Changes of government don't (yet) have a real impact on my day to day existence and that makes me very apathetic when it comes to this stuff. It's a luxury I know, and it's not admirable. Might be different when I'm old.

Sometimes I put it on to catch up on the news and then I get busy, and before I know it, I'm talking to it and swearing at it and daring it to stop being such a stupid useless twat. Once I get into that mode, it takes me ages to remember the silly thing has an off switch.

As for joining a revolution, it's easy to say one thing and then do another, but even as a hypothetical, there's a lot of factors that would go into the equation. By revolution, you mean a violent overthrow, not just large-scale strikes/protests/civil-disobedience, right? Well, if the govt suspended elections indefinitely because of “security concerns”, like they did in Egypt, that'd probably do it for me. Or if they banned all the opposition parties and started imprisoning political opponents. Anything short of that, I dunno, probably not. Revolutions always run the risk of landing you in even worse shape than what you started in, so I don't think they should be entered into lightly.

As for fleeing the country (or even a particular state), I hate the idea of running away like that, but I wouldn't rule it out if things got bad enough. There's a story in the family, that about 50 years ago, one of the uncles had to flee interstate. He discovered a minister was involved in some very bad criminal activity and told a young copper that he was friendly with. A couple of days later, the young copper came to see him and said that if he wasn't out of the state within two days, he would be “found” in possession of a very large quantity of drugs. How much truth is in that, I don't know; but I'd definitely do a runner in that situation too.

And things are getting quite bad in QLD at the moment. The govt is in open war with the judiciary. The attorney general seems to want to decide how long people go to gaol for on a case-by-case basis, and whether or not they get released once their sentence has been served; and these laws that can land you in prison for 15+ years for associating with the wrong person are downright scary.
