Hair

Last week's She-Ra post included a link to a video that talked about the cultural significance of women's hair. Here it is again, in case you're interested:

It's got me thinking. For a lot of years, I had very short hair, and I loved it. You don't have to worry about knots and tangles; it doesn't take forever to dry; it almost never gets caught on things, or under things; babies can't grab hold of it; it never falls in your food; it doesn't blow around in the wind; you don't get massive plugs of hair in your drains; and it's way cooler in the summer.

… However …

I haven't cut my hair for a couple of years now … and I don't know why. I mean, for all the reasons I stated above, I really really want to … but of all the things I procrastinate over, this is the thing I find easiest to put off indefinitely. I dunno, it's like once it got to a certain length, it almost took on a life of its own, and cutting it almost started to feel a little bit like having a pet euthanised. … A really annoying pet, that pisses and shits everywhere, and occasionally destroys your stuff, but … well … you get what I mean, right?

I'm at that decision point. I'm thinking about letting it grow for a while again. It feels kinda frumpy for me right now, so I think I'll grow it out and get a fringe cut back in. :)

How do you feel generally about long hair vs short hair?

I had my hair cut off at the start of this year. I stopped dying it mid last year. It's mostly grey with a big white patch, so people think I'm 10-15 years older than I really am

Snow white hair runs in one side of my family. I was born with it, but over the course on my childhood and teenage years, the colour darkened through just about every shade of blonde imaginable. I spent my twenties as a brunette, and by the time I was thirty it was nearly black. Then, it turned a dark charcoal grey, and has been lightening up ever since. I'm hoping I live long enough to see it go back to being snow white again.

The only thing I've never been is a ranga ;^D

Alex, I think if my sister had lived, she'd have run the same gamut as you. I have always been what my mum describes as dull mousey brown, and my hairdresser claims as dark blonde. But I've been colouring it since I was 30, so I'm basically blonde, but now there's some grey coming through.

I am, however, a half-ranga. Guess where? :D The collar definitely does not match the cuffs with me. Which I get from my Dad, since mum has dark colouring.
