Day 188: Techno-woo

Just a friendly reminder that anti-virus software for your phone is useless at best and actively harmful at worst. Keep well clear.

I had an odd popup on my phone a while back. I did install antivirus software, scan my phone and then uninstall it. I did actually consider doing a hard reset, but as I resist using phonebanking, I think I'd be okay even if there was some malware on my phone.

What's the cause of this adamant post.

After the recent ransom-ware attacks, there were stories about a spike in dodgy anti-virus installs on mobile phones.

Then, the other day, I came across someone who'd actually installed one of these things on their phone. From what I could gather, all it was was an advertising trojan. Hopefully, that's all it was.

Surely if you install a product from a reputable company (blue tick) such as Kaspersky, the worst that's going to happen is it'll slow down your phone?

Yes, you're right; a product from Kaspersky is going to be on the "useless" end of the spectrum rather than the "harmful" end. There are a LOT of other AV apps out there though, and many of them aren't anywhere near as benign.
