Orange Is The New Black - Season 3

I would ask that when you start talking about an episode that hasn't been talked about before, start by putting the episode number in "<b>old" tags.

Like this:

Episode 1

Thank you. That is all.

Episode 1

[05:18] Oh dear, they've completely de-fanged Doggett haven't they? She's going to be wacky comic relief from now on, isn't she?
[07:30] Look who's back inside!
Also: I fully endorse the no spit rule. I've never liked sharing drinks with people.
Also: Notice we've had two scenes and no Chapman? Reckon we're finally immersed enough in the world that we can do away with having a protagonist?
[12:01] Who was the egg woman?
Also: 3 scenes, 12 minutes, Chapman finally appears.
[12:50] I wonder how many people watching this are going to get the Bettie Page reference?
[17:43] Nice scene in the laundry room. First chuckle of the episode comes from the meth-heads. And I'd forgotten about that bag of smack being there.
Also: Good to see Morello again too. Crazy as ever.
[18:40] They do a good job of finding kids that look like the older actors on this show.
[21:39] Trying to remember … isn't Alex back inside because of something Chapman did? Didn't she nark on her in the last season, or something?
[28:52] So, when Chapman talks about it "not being your fault", about how it was "the system", she's trying to relieve her own guilt right? I remember you once saying you thought Chapman might have always had a nasty streak that we're yet to see. I wonder if that's where this is going.
Also: I'm sure Alex is shrinking. I'm positive she was quite a bit taller than Chapman early on. Now they're the same size?
[38:52] I liked Kabuto's little pep-talk. Much needed high point. This episode's been fairly flat so far.
[41:13] The pinata gag was alright too. And I only just remembered who that little Asian lass is. She was introduced last season.
[48:01] I don't know how that scene in Doggett's graveyard was meant to be taken, but I actually found it a little touching. I'm remembering now that she and Boo struck up a bit of a friendship during the big storm at the end of last season.

Overall: I wouldn't exactly call that a strong start. Felt a bit meandering and directionless. No real emotional arc to it either. Not for me, anyway. Here's hoping things pick up.

Episode 2

[04:41] Nice way to get the ball rolling with Red & Chapman. Off to a better start than last time.
Also: Are we supposed to know who this women is who's visiting? Who's George? Oh wait, this is Pornstache's mum, isn't it? I think I know this actress.
[16:17] Maybe there's a little of the old Doggett left after all. I have to wonder about this underwear thing; an attempt to subvert the sexy women's prison trope?
[18:03] It just hit me that the logic progression of this storyline is for Alex to be killed and then Chapman to have to live with the guilt. Let's hope they don't go down that route. I've grown quite attached to my namesake.
[25:37] Yeah, I don't get the panic over the bedbugs; like having to strip off IMMEDIATELY if you suspect they're in your clothes. Couldn't be any worse than lice or fleas, could they? Just seems a little over-the top is all.
[32:17] Good scene with Nicky & Luschek. I think I like Nicky more and more as this show goes on. She never stops growing on me.
[33:10] So why is Poussay into voodoo all of a sudden? Why are any of them into it? All this seems to have just come out of nowhere. And Poussay seems like the last person to be into it. Something feels off about this.
[35:00] What, no, it's too early for Chapman to be confessing; this angle still has so much legs.
[36:17] Are we supposed to feel empathy for Chapman? I do not. To tell the truth, I don't feel anything toward her at this point.
[42:47] The prison's closing? Well, that either means the show is wrapping up, or the last episode will be about how the prison doesn't close down.
[44:31] Dog farting video was on a site called "Video" that looked an awful lot like youtube, but wasn't youtube.
[48:15] Did Nicky steal Nicky's candy?
[51:56] Red's getting all the good scenes. Although, considering Chapman's revelation, it did seem to lack a bit of punch.
[55:12] Kind of disappointed that wasn't an actual fight scene. Aggressive sex felt like the easy way out.
[55:57] Why did he leave the cot beside the road?

Overall: There's something really not right about this season so far, isn't there? Like a song that's being played out of tune, or something.

Episode 3

[03:29] That's why you women are in prison, because you suck at crime. Probably one of the best lines of the season.
[07:40] Pop under ads on the computer, nice touch.
[09:44] What did Red say about corpses? Was that on a previous episode?
[12:14] That was a great speech from Alex. Really resonated.
[13:07] Nicky did steal Nicky's candy. This really isn't going to be good for Nicky.
[16:17] Alex is not a fucking sex cow. The pacing might be off, but at least there's no shortage of good one liners.
[17:34] Morella seems to be getting younger? And Alex seems tall again?
[19:29] Healy's "Alex you dumb bitch" actually got me rolling with laughter.
[21:29] I like reading more than I like living my actual life. What a statement.
[23:42] My birthday wish came true. That is pretty funny. Still, somebody's probably going to Maximum for this Heroin. You reckon it'll be these two. I think I'll miss 'em.
[28:59] The improv scene felt too easy.
[34:14] Nicky's really is a compelling character. She can't resist the one thing she knows will kill her. The only place worse for her than being locked up is being free.
[39:18] I think that scene with Red as translator actually lifted this whole episode.
[48:59] Feel like it's gonna be hard to get through the rest of the series without Nicky.

Overall: Best episode so far. Kinda feels like the season's actually started now. You reckon Nicky'll be back?

Episode 4

[07:30] Y'know, I was just thinking that we've never seen anything about Boo's history. And here we go. I think I like her dad already.
[08:45] Have you heard of lesbian bed death before? I've heard it mentioned once or twice. Is it widely considered to be a real thing?
[09:35] Chapman's birthday? How much time has actually passed since the start of the first season? Also, are Chapman's outside people no longer in the show?
[11:16] The next season will be about the evils of private prisons. I can smell it. And I have no objections. I think private prisons are a horrible idea.
[13:14] Morello looks awful. My hat's off to the makeup department.
[24:59] Is this meant to be the start of a romance between Red and Healy. I don't see it.
[29:30] Morello looks like a completely different person now.
[35:11] Well, looks like Chapman's family are still in this. Nice little inter-generational interplay there. Now, what about the fiance & best friend?
[41:45] I've noticed Alex has a dramatic flair for taking her glasses off and putting them on. I've never been able to do this. I can't see shit without my specs. Which reminds me, didn't we establish that show Alex can't see shit without hers, either? Wasn't there a whole episode about that? Did I imagine it?
[42:22] Holy shit, Tegan & Sara are on Alex's mix tape. The girls from the opening ceremony of the soccer. The Canadian synth-pop duo I'd never heard of before. What are the chances? We'll, I suppose they're both lesbians (Tegan & Sara) … Wait, are all the artists on this list lesbians?

Overall: I think what's going on between Alex & Chapman is currently the least interesting part of the show right now. Not only that, but it seems kind of off key. This whole season's had a much lighter tone to it. I suppose, now we know everybody and empthise with them, there's no fear of the unknown like there was in season 1, and we don't have a Vee character to act as an antagonist like we did in season 2. Apart from what happened with Nicky, this whole season's felt a little too "safe".

Also, having Bennett run off like that, it felt like another waste of a good angle.

Episode 5

[10:34] So, they're actually doing a romance between Red & Healy. Red must have a thing for thick blokes, I guess.
[15:19] And it's even more awkward and silly than I thought it was going to be. This is some ham-fisted shit right here. Interesting about the coffee though. Makes me glad I don't drink it. And I guess they're doing the evils of private prisons this season rather than next?
[16:30] Wait, did they do some voodoo shit with Vee last season? I don't remember that. I can see why you go back and re-cap between seasons.
[24:10] I appreciate Crazy-Eyes' explanation of how mutation works.
[25:00] I think the freckled lass needs to have a proper story arc.
[38:07] I'm starting to like the meth-heads more & more. But still, I dunno. It feels like there's very little dramatic tension in this season and I'm just killing time between bits of funny dialogue.
[43:41] The job is going to be shit, isn't it?
[47:00] Guard duty. They're going to have inmates guarding inmates. They're going to do a Stanford style thing. That's where the dramatic tension's going to come from for the end of the season.
[50:58] So, is that the end of Red & Healy? A lot of build-up for nothing if it is.
[57:39] Oh, it's a sweatshop. Well, that's a little bit fucking deflating, considering the grand scheme I was envisaging.

Episode 6

[05:37] Oh good; I've actually been looking forward to finding out more about Chang. Gives me hope that some of the other minor characters are going to get fleshed out too.
[18:07] Ooh, I like that interplay between Soso & Chang. To everyone else, she's Asian, to the woman who's actually from Asia, she's European.
[23:40] So, is the Pom new, or has she been in the background a while?
[24:00] Merello's whole thing used to be the time she plowed into her appearance, and now she's not even wearing lippy? What's going on here? Nice to see they're using her for something though.

Overall: Oh, I like Chang. I wish they'd spent more time on her backstory in this episode and less on all the other bullshit. I get that the overall theme of the episode was supposed to be about women's relationship with their appearance, but I dunno, I thought the other angles were a bit weak. Hope we get to see more of young Chang in the future. Probably won't though, I suspect.

Episode 7

[07:30] That's a pretty good summation of the internet. Also, is the Pom a Pom or an Aussie? I'm not sure anymore.
[13:00] I really want to read Suzanne's play.
[14:10] This is America: Violence is all good, but sex, lord no. Thank you Tasty.
[14:56] Morello's back to being Morello, by the looks of it.
[30:49] I really want to read Suzanne's story now.
[39:56] Okay, Poussay's sold me, let me read it already.
[57:30] That moment between Red & Norma at the end; I don't think I got the significance of that. What was it all about?

Overall: I'm taking less time to comment, which I guess means I'm getting more engrossed. Don't know if the show's getting better or I'm just settling into the rhythm. Whatever the case, it took a while. Half way through already.

Episode 8

[05:55] What's the story with Alex and her mum? I remember something, seeing her as a kid, there was something going on, but I don't remember what.
[14:35] I fuckin' love this story line with Suzanne's erotic fiction. I so want to read Time Hump Chronicles
[19:56] Funny; watching Chapman's grand speech, I'm reminded that I was just talking to someone the other day about how feminist messages get appropriated for commercial exploitation. And here we go.
[28:40] She is Australian, isn't she?
[33:39] Love Doggett's doughnut advertising proposal. Where do you this thing between these two is heading? Sex?
[37:08] I Thought this corporate bloke was going to completely fuck Caputo, but it looks like he's actually doing right by him. Not that it'll do any good. No good deed goes unpunished and all that.
[54:09] Chapman says Lolly is harmless. That means Lolly is probably very dangerous, doesn't it?

Alex said...

Episode 9

[01:53] What the hell was Chapman doing with that drinking straw in the underwear bag?
[02:00] You're going to tell me that you can stuff a huge package like that down the front of your pants and nobody's going to see a bulge?
[02:53] Quite a turn-around for Suzanne, now she's a celebrity. But can she stand the pressure? And can you survive on nothing but cum? Find out, this episode.
[08:45] Amish. That's an interesting twist. Would not have seen that coming. I like it though.
[19:26] Rodcocker gives her a "shocker" with his twin penises. Obviously I need to brush up on my slang.
[30:09] So, Leanne, the meth-head; Rather than being expanded upon, I feel like her whole character's being rewritten in this episode. I suppose this is what happens when you make a character a brainless one note joke. You either break continuity to rectify the problem or hobble yourself.
[36:23] So, at this point I have to wonder — now that Leanne's a real character and not just hillbilly meth-head #2 — was that last comment supposed to reflect genuine racist tendencies, or was she just looking for something hurtful to say.
[40:09] Is Suzanne's fanbase supposed to be a commentary on fans of the show, or fans in general, or … ?
[43:13] Ooh, nice twist with the transexual's (don't remember her name) son. How do you react when you find out your kid's a bully?
[44:38] Oh dear, this thing with Doggett has just taken a nasty turn.
[48:41] No apology between the duelling mums. Hmmm, wonder where this is going.

Overall: What was I saying earlier about Chapman having a nasty streak? The Doggett thing has me hooked. Remember how scary she was in the first season? My, how things have come around, haven't they. Also, I feel like there's enough complicated, intertwined shit going on now for this to be properly interesting. It did take its sweet fucking time getting going though.

Episode 10

[03:04] Sweet moment there between 10 year old Doggett and her mum. She never had a chance, did she?
[10:01] Kind of getting sick of this Judy King subplot. Hope it's going somewhere worthwhile.
[12:39] Yes, fuck Bill Pullman in Independence Day. In fact, fuck that whole stupid movie. First time I've felt any solidarity with Chapman this whole season.
[12:59] Who the fuck was that in the vege patch?
[22:15] Oh dear, young Doggett looks too old to be young Doggett. Looks like we both went to similar parties though in our younger days. Although, to be fair, the ones I went to had different music and there wasn't that much dancing.
[31:40] Pornstache has never been more terrifying. I guess that means Mrs Pornstache will still want to adopt?
[31:49] Aussie actress, Crocodile Dundee joke, koala reference, what's going on here?
[33:38] So, the genius of erotic fiction has no practical experience. I don't know whether I care for that twist or not. It seems to contradict stuff from season 1. Also, dunno if I'd be getting advice from Morello. About anything.
[40:50] Jesus, at this rate Morello's going to end up with Nicky down in max. I miss Nicky.
[42:19] It strikes me that they've missed a trick here. They could have been running a comparison between the exploitation of the women working in the sweatshop and Chapman's exploitation of the "panty girls". However, they seem to have forgotten about the sweatshop.
[51:44] So, now Alex is all alone and vulnerable. Now would be the perfect time for the deadly Lolly to make her move.
[52:57] Oh, Alex can fight? Had to watch that a second time. Not bad at all.

Overall: Well, that's a little more depressing and somewhat less interesting than where I thought the episode was going. Both with Doggett and with Alex.

Episode 11

[01:31] I can't claim any credit because I didn't say it, but I suspected something between Caputo & Fig. There had to be a reason that they brought her back for this season, and what she did earlier, that was a fairly obvious contrivance. There were other, better ways to accomplish the same thing from a plot perspective. Also, the way she called him "Beer-Can" — been at the back of my mind this whole time. Of course, there's still the possibility that this scene is just a Caputo dream-sequence, but I don't think so.
[02:47] I don't get the "see you next Tuesday" reference.
[06:15] Something really fucking horrible is going to happen to young Caputo in this wrestling match. I can feel it in my bones.
[07:00] I'm digging this thing with guard Rodcocker. The Suzanne-the-author plotline's been one of the high-points of the season.
[09:35] At this point, I'm going to guess Lolly's crazy act is an act. This is gonna be a double twist. It feels like it's being a little over played to be otherwise.
[12:48] I actually got a little tingly from that interaction between Doggett & Boo. That scene had some power to it.
[13:48] Annoying dingo-fucker accent. Don't know whether to give Alex that one or not.
[24:06] Oh, how I love it when red talks down to Chapman. Tell her to go fuck herself again, Red.
[27:30] This is going to be a parallel to when Caputo wrestled the mentally handicapped kid. He's going to do a good thing for someone else and it's going to bite him right in the arse.
[33:44] The worst part of becoming a woman is having to deal with catty, backstabbing bullshit. That's saying something, isn't it?
[34:13] A taste of freedom and a big scare sure has changed Alex. Remember when she was talking about how she was never going straight because the only thing she was ever good at was crime?
[40:55] Remember when Alex called Chapman a manipulative cunt? Well, here we go.
[44:49] War between the councillors is kind of interesting. Healy's kind of fucked in the head. Also, Caputo's just fucked.
[46:50] The scene with Caputo and Ange; touching and meaningful. Now, what's the bad thing that inevitably happens to Caputo?
[53:00] For a while, I was worried they wouldn't do a follow up to the Doggett/Boo scene at the beginning. But it was so good, I felt a little prickle behind the eyes. And right on the heels of a very nice scene with young Caputo. This episode is going great guns.

Overall: Now I'm confused about which side Caputo's actually playing for. Maybe I'm overthinking this show. I feel like I'm really, really enjoying this now … and only two more episodes to go.

Whoops, wrong episode number. Let's have another go …

Episode 12

[07:23] I'm calling Soso as a prime candidate for suicide.
[08:47] I've never seen the Dragon Tattoo movies, but I'm liking Boo right now.
[22:22] I feel like Red's response to the corn thieves should have been along the lines of "I don't give a shit about your ancestors. I'm a fucking Russian immigrant."
[22:47] Wow, nice save by Tasty.
[28:33] Good scene with Daya and her mum. Will the baby survive? We'll see, I guess.
[23:22] Sack of squid bits? That's not an authentic Australian insult. I call shenanigans! Okay, to be fair, her whole performance in this scene was kind of crap, so it didn't feel that out of place.
[31:37] Soooo … where the fuck did the corn come from?
[41:10] I'm guessing the dead baby is a lie.
[43:32] Bingo.
[48:15] So, the Red & Healy thing is still a thing?
[49:30] Fan fiction is cheapening my legacy. Brilliant.
[50:23] Tasty's a mum. Didn't see it coming, but I like it.
[53:47] Interesting twist with Doggett & Boo.
[55:32] I'm getting out on Tuesday. I can't help but laugh at Chapman's misfortune. Can't help it.
[56:02] That hand. Either Alex has been murdered, which I doubt, or Soso has ODed on pills. That's my guess.

Overall: One episode left. What kind of punch are they going to give it? It doesn't feel like there's that much to resolve.

Alex said...

Episode 13

[19:52] Even though she's crazy and this is all going to end badly — I feel good for Morello.
[23:23] Where are they going with this Norma shit? I'm getting a bit jack of it, to be honest.
[33:26] Maybe Healy's going to commit suicide.
[34:31] Home tattooing. Great way to catch something nasty.
[44:15] All heart and tits and no brain. That a Russian colloquialism?
[47:20] Okay, the toast shrine is fucking ridiculous. This has got to end.
[56:35] Oooh, this thing with Boo and Doggett might have some legs yet. Good. I've liked this thread so far.
[1:03:26] Young love. I don't know whether that line justified this whole storyline, but it wasn't bad. I suspect there's also another punchline coming.
[1:07:34] Now Chapman's a complete cunt.
[1:10:23] And now Caputo's a cunt. So, was his arc meant to parallel Chapman's in this season? I did not pick up on that. Still 20mins left in this ep; are they going to try and resolve this in that amount of time?
[1:19:16] Cindy's gotta be naked for it to work.
[1:20:32] Actually, I thought they'd all be stripping off.

Overall: Ooh, what a way to end it. Nice little bitter sweet moment at the end with the new bunks going in and all the new inmates getting off the buses while Morello's wedding music plays. Poussay & Soso found each other, a lot of old grudges were forgiven, even Suzy found somebody. On the other hand Caputo and Chapman are both cunts now and Alex might be dead. Although, I would be quite surprised if that were actually the case.

Still, at least we can safely assume there'll be another season. I think Chapman will make a fine villain. Which, quite frankly, I think was something this season needed. The whole thing felt a little too touchy feely. I mean, you need touchy feely shit in a story like this, but you have to balance it out and make it feel earned for it to have any emotional clout. Otherwise, it turns into a fuckin' prison soap opera.

But I don't wanna be too hard on this. I was really into it by the end. I little disappointed with how long it took to get going, but pleased with the destination.

… I guess that just about wraps up TV watching season for another year.

OK I haven't read these because we have stalled, tech issue as they expired on whichever service we were watching them on, so Clokes found more copies and they were corrupted, or whatever, wouldn't play. We are up to EP 9 and to be honest, they'd gone off the boil for me, the Chapman Alex thing was stoopid, but then it got interesting with the arrival of Lolly, so I AM going to finish, and come and comment. Thanks for being patient!!! I am so slack with all things bloggy right now. Hope you are good/well/surviving! xx

Melba said...

EP 8 - You said [54:09] Chapman says Lolly is harmless. That means Lolly is probably very dangerous, doesn't it? - Me: so funny. I know now she is but at that stage, that was a very funny comment to make.

EP 9 - the straw? I have no fucking idea. And the bulge in the pants, I thought exactly the same thing. 'AS IF'
I liked the Amish twist as well. Did not see coming. Was annoyed though that when they were speaking archaic German or whatever it was, no subtitles. So couldn't get that dialogue. When the parents were talking about her and she was listening in. I was really hooked at this point with Doggett's storyline too.

EP 10 - young Doggett did look far too old to be young Doggett. And the scene between Pornstache and his mum = so scary.

EP 11 - see you next Tuesday = C U N T
I really also was enjoying so much at this stage. All the Suzanne stuff. I loved the twist with her unable to go into the broom closet.

EP 12 - re Soso, me too, really felt it...
Chapman as bad guy. It's kind of funny but she kind of does it a little bit well.
I also don't know where the corn came from.

EP 13 - also had that feeling about Healy.
Agree about the stupid Norma cult thing. Stupid.
I think the Doggett/Boo rape discussion thing has been really good actually. I read somewhere on the internet that 'OITNB is the only show that "gets" rape' Not sure exactly what that means, but acknowledging there can be nuances with rape, and probably mostly are nuances. And confusion.
I thought they'd all strip off to the water too.
Agree, I thought it was a very slow start to the season, and with Chapman having little relevance. But I like her becoming a corrupted (?) or maybe just more in line with 'how she really is' that is her true colours so to speak. She's always been manipulative, and we've always seen that. With Larry, with Alex, everyone. And so so flakey. Anyway I'm glad I went back to it and finished cause those last few eps were worth it.

Alex said...

I'm pretty sure the episodes I've got have subtitles for the Amish scenes (Dutch?). A lot of the time now, I watch shows with subtitles on even when they're in English. I have trouble understanding things when characters mumble or the music is too loud.

Strangely, now that several weeks have passed, the characters that I'm most keen to see what they do with in the next season, are Caputo & Fig. And mother & son Pornstache. And I suppose I'm a bit curious to see if my namesake lives or dies. Also, I want a season with Chapman in full villain mode. How low can they take her?

Melba said...

I always have subtitles on if they are available for the same reasons... can't hear, can't understand. I'm a bit deaf plus for the reasons you mention, makes hearing harder. But our downloads don't have subbies. How do you get em with subbies?

Yes I am most curious about Pornstache. He is fucking going to go mental, his face during that scene with his mother, so angry. I don't think Alex will die, but maybe she will. It's a bit tricksy to do that again, in the season finale, to leave us hanging like they did with Doggett... Unoriginal. I also want a whole season with Chapman going the full villain, and then getting smashed down by someone new. I think with those new inmates arriving in the final scenes, the set up is there for her to bully/intimidate some newbie. Which would be interesting cause she wasn't bullied or intimidated, not really when she arrived. People were good to her and it was only when she crossed Red, unknowingly, that she had a hard time.

When shows like this come out, I tend to get them through file-trading — either online, or with people I know (I know a few people who are BIG into file-trading). If I like something, I'll buy it later, when it comes out on DVD. I refuse to "buy" media through any sort of service that ultimately controls how I can watch it. That's just a glorified form of rental, and it only takes the deletion of your account for all the stuff you "own" to disappear. No, not interested in that. And I can't justify the expense of pay telly — not when I only watch 2 shows a year.

But to answer your question, I find a lot of the video files floating around these days come with subtitles — either muxed into an MKV video file, or as a separate SRT — you should find them mentioned in the description when you go to download. And if they don't come with subbies, there are now whole websites online that are just people swapping subtitle files. I haven't had to use those in a while though, and can't remember their exact names (Subscene rings a bell). Anyway, you should be able to find them easily by searching "free subtitles" or something like that.

Hope that's some help. I know how frustrating it can be watching a show IN YOUR OWN NATIVE LANGUAGE and still not understand half of what anyone's saying. Sometimes I wish real life conversations had subtitle too.

*

Also, I haven't watched season 1 yet, but I hear A LOT of people rubbishing season 2 of True Detective. You seen that one yet?
