You Be The Judge

SBS has the movie Dredd up on its site for the next week. I think Dredd was the last flick I went to see at the picture theatre, and I enjoyed it immensely.

Tonally it's different to anything I've seen in a long while, feeling a lot more like something from the late '70s or early '80s -- more akin to Escape From New York, The Warriors, Assault On Precinct 13, etc -- than a modern action film. There's also a bunch of clever social commentary in there that's so subtle and understated that I imagine a lot of people will miss it altogether; and truth be told, I'm not completely certain it was all intentional. Doesn't matter though; accidental genius is still genius!

I think it might also be the only movie I've ever seen that was ENHANCED by being in 3D. Not that it matters much, since the version on SBS is regular old flat picture.

I've talked about Dredd before, and it's not like it's the greatest movie ever made, but for some reason, I always feel like proselytising it. Probably because it's a really solid film that was critically panned and bombed at the box office, while shit like the Transformers movies continue to make money hand over fist.

If you've ever enjoyed an action movie in your life, I strongly urge you to check this out for free while you've got the chance. Dredd expires April 15th.

One of the film's lighter moments.

And here's an album from German group Xandria, which I've been listening to recently.
